How to print these flashcards
- Download the PDF in US Letter or A4.
- Print double-sided and choose "flip on long edge". Each answer lands on the back of its own card.
- Use cardstock (65 to 110 lb) if you have it. It lasts longer and the answers don't show through. Plain paper works too.
- Cut along the dashed lines. For cards that last all year, laminate them and keep each set on a binder ring.
How to practice the 1 to 12 mixed with flashcards
Hold up a card, read the question aloud and answer it before flipping. Put cards answered straight away on a "know it" pile and slow or wrong ones on a "try again" pile. Go through the "try again" pile until it is empty, then shuffle everything and start again.
Five minutes a day works better than one long session a week. The online cards above come shuffled, so the facts never arrive in the same order twice.
For two players, deal the cards out and take turns asking each other. Whoever answers first keeps the card. To practice division, use Answers first: the card shows the answer and the child works out the question.
Tips and patterns for the 1 to 12 mixed
- All 144 facts. Use it once the single tables are known, to find the few that still slow you down.
- Pull out any card that takes more than a few seconds and practice those on their own.
Who this set is for
Grades 3 to 4. The Common Core asks children to know all products of two one-digit numbers by the end of 3rd grade. The 11 and 12 tables go beyond that, and many schools add them in 3rd or 4th grade.
Common Core standard 3.OA.C.7: Fluently multiply and divide within 100.
Frequently asked questions
How do I print the 1 to 12 mixed flashcards double-sided?
Download the PDF, choose double-sided printing and pick "flip on long edge". The fronts and answers are lined up, so each answer prints on the back of its own card. Then cut along the dashed lines.
What if my printer can't print double-sided?
Print the odd pages first (the fronts). Put the printed stack back in the paper tray, then print the even pages (the answers). Do a one-sheet test first so you know which way up the paper goes back in.
When should my child use the mixed sets?
Once each single table in the set is answered quickly. If one fact keeps coming up slow, go back to its single table for a few days, then come back to the mixed set.
What order should kids learn the times tables in?
Most children learn 2, 5 and 10 first, then 3, 4 and 8, then 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12. Each step builds on the one before: the 4 table is the 2 table doubled, and the 8 table is the 4 table doubled.
Can I print these on A4 paper?
Yes. Use the A4 download. The cards are laid out to fit A4, so nothing gets cut off at the edges.
