How to print these flashcards

  1. Download the PDF in US Letter or A4.
  2. Print double-sided and choose "flip on long edge". Each answer lands on the back of its own card.
  3. Use cardstock (65 to 110 lb) if you have it. It lasts longer and the answers don't show through. Plain paper works too.
  4. Cut once down the middle, then across along the dashed lines. The cards run to the edges of the page, so there is nothing to trim at the sides, and the top and bottom cuts take off the small header and footer.
  5. For cards that last all year, laminate them and keep each set on a binder ring.

How to practice the 9 times table with flashcards

Hold up a card, read the question aloud and answer it before flipping. Put cards answered straight away on a "know it" pile and slow or wrong ones on a "try again" pile. Go through the "try again" pile until it is empty, then shuffle everything and start again.

Five minutes a day works better than one long session a week. The online cards above come shuffled, so the facts never arrive in the same order twice.

For two players, deal the cards out and take turns asking each other. Whoever answers first keeps the card. To practice division, use Answers first: the card shows the answer and the child works out the question.

Tips and patterns for the 9 times table

  • From 9 × 1 to 9 × 10, the digits of each answer add up to 9: 9 × 7 = 63, and 6 + 3 = 9.
  • The tens digit is one less than the number you multiply by: 9 × 7 starts with 6.
  • Or work out times 10 and take one lot away: 9 × 6 is 60 − 6 = 54.

Who this set is for

Grade 3. The Common Core asks children to know all products of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of 3rd grade. Many children start the 2, 5 and 10 tables in 2nd grade.

Common Core standard 3.OA.C.7: Fluently multiply and divide within 100.

Frequently asked questions

How do I print the 9 times table flashcards double-sided?

Download the PDF, choose double-sided printing and pick "flip on long edge". The fronts and answers are lined up, so each answer prints on the back of its own card. Then cut along the dashed lines.

What if my printer can't print double-sided?

Print the odd pages first (the fronts). Put the printed stack back in the paper tray, then print the even pages (the answers). Do a one-sheet test first so you know which way up the paper goes back in.

What grade learns the 9 times table?

Usually 3rd grade, when the Common Core asks children to know all one-digit multiplication facts from memory.

What order should kids learn the times tables in?

Most children learn 2, 5 and 10 first, then 3, 4 and 8, then 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12. Each step builds on the one before: the 4 table is the 2 table doubled, and the 8 table is the 4 table doubled.

Can I print these on A4 paper?

Yes. Use the A4 download. The cards are laid out to fit A4, so nothing gets cut off at the edges.
