How to print these flashcards

  1. Download the PDF in US Letter or A4.
  2. Print double-sided and choose "flip on long edge". Each answer lands on the back of its own card.
  3. Use cardstock (65 to 110 lb) if you have it. It lasts longer and the answers don't show through. Plain paper works too.
  4. Cut once down the middle, then across along the dashed lines. The cards run to the edges of the page, so there is nothing to trim at the sides, and the top and bottom cuts take off the small header and footer.
  5. For cards that last all year, laminate them and keep each set on a binder ring.

How to practice counting by 10s with flashcards

Hold up a card and ask "what number is this?" Cards your child knows straight away go on a "know it" pile, the rest go back in the stack. A few minutes a day works better than one long session.

Put the cards in order on the floor or table, then mix them up and do it again. Ask what comes before and after a number, or hide one card and see if your child can spot which is missing.

Once the numbers are easy, turn the cards over and read the number words. Early readers can match each word to its number. Use Answers first in the online cards to practice reading the words on their own.

Tips for counting by 10s

  • Count the tens on fingers: hold up one hand for 10, both hands for 20, then keep going with a partner's hands.
  • Every card ends in zero, and the first digit counts up 1 to 9. Point out the pattern before turning the cards over.
  • Once 10s are easy, try counting on from a ten: 30, 31, 32… It links counting by tens back to counting by ones.

Who this set is for

Frequently asked questions

How do I print the counting by 10s flash cards double-sided?

Download the PDF, choose double-sided printing and pick "flip on long edge". The numbers and words are lined up, so each number word prints on the back of its own card. Then cut along the dashed lines.

What if my printer can't print double-sided?

Print the odd pages first (the fronts). Put the printed stack back in the paper tray, then print the even pages (the answers). Do a one-sheet test first so you know which way up the paper goes back in.

What age are number flash cards for?

Numbers 1 to 10 suit most 3 and 4 year olds. Kindergarteners work up to 20, and by the end of kindergarten most children can count to 100 by ones and by tens.

Can I print these on A4 paper?

Yes. Use the A4 download. The cards are laid out to fit A4, so nothing gets cut off at the edges.
